I want to begin this inaugural edition of the President’s Corner by thanking Doug Keller, Post 108 Webmaster, for inviting me to submit an update on behalf of Unit 108. We are a small group of members, but that doesn’t mean we are not active.
Each year Unit 108 sponsors two girls to Girls State that is held at U of A in Tucson each June. This weeklong event gives girls the opportunity to learn about our government and our responsibilities as citizens. High school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units from across Arizona for this program, where they learn about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. The participants are assigned to mock cities and either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party.” Assistance from dedicated ALA volunteers ensures the program’s nonpartisan governmental, patriotic, and civic objectives are carried out through interactive learning. This year’s participants were just selected from Bradshaw High School; they are J. Jordan and A. Castillo.
We are also in the process of accepting applications for two scholarships for graduating seniors from Bradshaw HS or AZ Agribusiness and Equine Center, INC (a charter school in Prescott Valley).
We are currently planning a Yard Sale on May 3 & 4, 2024 to raise funds to support our Poppy Fund. This fund exists for the exclusive benefit of Veterans such as activities at the Northern AZ Veterans Affairs Health Care System (NAVAHCS); these include things such as quarterly Bingo Parties and the annual Gift Distribution for Veterans receiving care through the Domiciliary and Community Living Center. Anyone who would like to donate good used or new items for this sale should contact Trish at 928-632-2290 to arrange delivery or pick up. No clothes please.
Auxiliary Unit 108 will be distributing Poppies at various locations on May 17 and 18. Help is always needed to make this a successful campaign. Please consider giving a few hours on one or both days; contact Trish at 928-632-2290 if you can spare a few hours on May 17th and/or 18th.
